Before understanding the Lan cable color code or RJ45 Connector color code, it is very important to understand the functions of 8 pins in the RJ45 port.
Functions of 8 Pins in RJ45 Port
According to the image given above, you can easily understand on the RJ45 Port available on PC and the router, the pin number 1 and 2 are used for sending the data; pin number 3 and 6 are used for receiving the data; the pin number 4,5,7 and 8 are used for power supply for POE devices.
On the other hand, the RJ45 Port available on Switch or Hub the pin number 1 and 2 are used for receiving the data; pin number 3 and 6 are used for sending the data; the pin number 4,5,7 and 8 are used for power supply for POE devices.
For communication between two networking devices, the sender pin must be get connected to the receiver pin. For this reason for connecting two dissimilar devices, we use a straight-through cable.

There are three types of LAN Cable:
- Straight Cable
- Cross Cable
- Rollover Cable
Straight Cable Color Code
Straight cable is used for connecting two dissimilar devices such as PC to Switch, Switch to Router, etc.
There is two color coding standard EIA/TIA 568A and EIA/TIA 568B. While making a straight-through cable, make sure on both the side you have to apply the same standards either EIA/TIA 568A or EIA/TIA 568B.
Here is the straight cable color code with EIA/TIA 568A Standard.
Here is the straight cable color code with the EIA/TIA 568B standard.
Cross Cable Color Code
Cross cable is used for connecting two similar devices such as PC to PC, Switch to Switch, Router to Router and it is also used to connect PC to Router because PC and Router use the same kind of RJ45 Port.
Here we are connecting two similar devices in which RJ45 Pin arrangement is the same. As we know that for communicating between two devices the sender pin must be get connected to the receiver pin. So, while making a cross cable, make sure on one side you have to apply EIA/TIA 568A standard and on the other side apply EIA/TIA 568B standard.
It is very easy to remember the color-coding of the cross-over cable. Here is the formula, (1,2; 3,6), which means Pin No 1 and 2 will be get connected to Pin No 3 and 6. The same formula will apply on both the side of the cable.

Rollover Cable Color Code
Rollover cable is used for connecting a PC to the console port of the Router. This cable is not used for sending or receiving data. It is only used for configuring the router.
Rollover cable can be configured either by using EIA/TIA 568A Standard or EIA/TIA 568B standard. Make sure, whatever standard you are using, on the other side you have to do the complete reverse color coding.
Here is the Roll Over Cable color code with EIA/TIA 568A Standard.
Here is the Roll Over Cable color code with EIA/TIA 568B Standard.
